new hard drive slow to format

Hi,
I got a new 250GB hard drive today, and used computer managment to set up a single primary partition, then started to format (NTFS file system).

That was over an hour ago and the counter has just clicked over to "1 percent completed" - I know it's a big drive, but at this rate the format will take five days to complete! Any clue what's going on here?

Never thought about that, hope he isn't external with only
USB 1.1
