I am getting anew hard drive today, what do I need to do prior to install
(other than backup data). I have revovery disks.
Do I need to uninstall XP Pro so it doesn;t think I am using the product key
on another compuer.
Tips suggestion, pease.

Almost all new HDDs come with a utility to copy the old HDD to the new one.
You could do that to migrate your OS and files. It is NOT a very fast
process, but it does work.

Faster programs are Ghost and Drive Image, both now owned by Symantec.

OK, but I don't want to copy I want to do a clean re-install. I don;t want to
spend the money.
XP Home then XP Pro, then SP2.
What do I need to do for that specifically.
Thank you

If you have XP Pro Upgrade, you should be able to just install it to a bare
HDD. When it asks for a qualifying product, you can put your XP Home CD in
the drive (assuming that it is a "real OS CD" and not just a proprietary
"Recovery Disk") so that it can verify your qualifying prior OS (NO need to
install it first).

Then you can install SP2 and all your apps, move your data over to the new
HDD and reset all your options.

I have the- Home edition Recovery disk (not full version) and the full retail
version of XP PRO.
The whole story is this: My laptop was stolen 6 months ago, it had XP Home
upgraded to XP PRO on it. when I bought a new laptop, I assumed I could put
the XP Pro upgrade on it (it came with XP Home). It would NOT let me do it.
IT said this product key is on another machine. Why would this happen and how
do I avoid it again? I had to pay $199 twice, which of course is crazy.
Thanks

Get the new drive, install the recover cd on it, then the xp pro cd over it.
Thats the only way.
