The software might be freeware, but the site isn't free to download
from!

........"we will continue to link in to the Homepages where they still exist
to enable you to still get the files (without paying) from there"......

Why is this any different to the many many "freeware" sites out there that
simply link to files ( That disappear in time) ??
At least this one gives you the choice, unlike some??

Ahh - No reply....
I thought so - then http://www.topqualityfreeware.com is really a legit
freeware site , just with the extra option of registration for a small fee
that gets you guaranteed access to all the freeware downloads, 24/7, all
virus free.

Thank you all.

Methinks maybe you own this site? Otherwise, why are you so defensive and
strident about this? If you choose to come to a freeware newsgroup and pitch a
pay service to obtain freeware, then you shouldn't be surprised if people think
you're full of crap.

There are MANY, MANY sites with freeware that you don't have to register with
nor pay any money to. They make their money the old fashion way - with
advertising.

Try http://www.sofotex.com/. They have a freeware RSS feed which is very
convenient.

I part-own it, and I'm trying to get some sensible feedback here from those
who are interested in all aspects of freeware.
I guess you are another critic who didn't bother to take a look.
I may be stupid, but I don't see a problem - those that don't want to sign
up for have a clickable link (no popup, reminder or cookie, no graphic ads
etc) to download all or any of the freeware from our description page to
the Authors download. There is no special members area like Snapfiles or
NoNags, everything is open to view to both paid members and unpaid
browsers. The registration fee is only payable if you want to download
directly from our own virus-free servers, which are up 24/7, unlike sofotex
who appear down today....

You won't find any here who are interested in sites that sell access to
freeware under any circumstances. You might make some money from the
site, but hawking it here is just going to draw more criticism, no
matter how you couch the notion of giving people the "choice" to pay
you for access.

I didn't bother -- you've explained the scheme well enough here.

-snip the explanation that *should* have been in the initial post.

If you wanted feedback, you should have asked an honest question or
two.

But you didn't.

All you did was post a link -- without comment, stating
explicitly in the header that it was "freeware", without declaration of
personal interest, and without suggesting that you wanted anything --
feedback or anything else -- apart from a way to get some punters to
look at your page and consider paying you some money.

And you think *you've* been misunderstood by philistines....that's
quite rich, actually.

BigJon;

I'm a legal-use nut. I only want to receive & use s/w that I can
legally use. I know you've been flamed in this thread but, I am
sincerely curious:

Does TopQualityFreeware assert that their business is legally
redistributing freeware? I ask because, as you surely know, freeware is
free "as in beer," not "as in speech." That is, it's free of charge as
long as the user follows the Terms of Use.

Zone Alarm, to cite just one freeware product listed on
TopQualitySoftware, cannot be redistributed w/o some kind of licensing
agreement. (Please see Section 2, "Use of Site Materials"
www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/aboutUs/legal.jsp.)

Put another way: Can you assert that your company is in compliance with
the Terms of Use (and/or redistribution) for all the freeware listed on
your site?

tia,
-Sparky
