When I R-click to create a New Folder, it takes ages for the pop-up menu to
come up because it gives me 20 other options for a "NEW x ". I never need any
of these options. How can I get rid of them from the r-click pop-up menu so I
can make a new folder quickly?

Thanks for the help!

Open Google search. Enter the search term "remove item from right-click
menu" without the quotes. Press enter. Peruse the many links which appear
and choose one that you like the looks of. Click on that link.

The moral of the story: "Always search first -- it is almost always faster
than asking here and waiting." ;-)

Hi Janet,

You can use TweakUI for that:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Install it and look under "Templates". You can uncheck what you don't
use. Of course some programs keep putting it back regardless.

Hi Janet,

Go to Start/Run and type in: shellnew

Kelly,

There must be another location also (most likely registry), as the
Templates in TweakUI list all the ones in the context menu, many more
than in the "shellnew" folder.

Oh sure, Terry.....but, she said new.

It depends on where in the right click menu.

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\OpenWithList
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

This is where some items are located.

You can also go to a specific File extension (example:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt\ShellNew) and right click on the ShellNew key and
select Delete, if the item shows up in the New context menu.

Other Checkpoints

It depends on where in the right click menu.

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\OpenWithList
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

Ha ha! I should have figured it wouldn't be a one or two location deal
with Windows! I've just always used TweakUI for it when every anyone
wants it modified and never looked into that fact that they aren't all
located in ONE place.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks Kelly. The folder you sent me to (C:\WINDOWS\SHELLNEW) has only four
files in it:
EXCEL9.XLS
MSPUB.PUB
PWRPNT11.POT
WINWORD8.DOC
and I have no idea what I am supposed to do here....:-)...

I think the problem is that I did not explain my question properly.....
My question was in regard to pop-up menus from (left-)clicking New after
having right-clicked anywhere in e.g., My Desktop, or any folder on my
computer (NOT when I am within a particular application!).
When in Desktop, this gives me a very short menu which includes: Arrange
Icons By OR Refresh OR New OR Properties. When I (left-)click on New, I get a
pop-up menu with no less than 21 (and forever growing) options: The first
option is Folder (which is what I want), the second is Shortcut (which I
would never use because I create short-cuts by r-dragging from the file or
folder in question), the next option is Briefcase, then Bitmap Image, then
tons of application-related formats. It seems everytime I add a new app, it
puts an option for itself in this "NEW x" menu. I would never use this, as I
would simply open the relevant app.....I would like to get rid of all these
unneeded options because it takes a long time for the menu to come up......

Thanks for the help!

TweakUI is very useful, but I just wanted to clarify what it is. It
basically just makes changes to the registry, but does nothing that you
couldn't do without it. It's simply an easy, non-risky way to make those
registry changes.

I can do registry changes only when there is a MS KB article regarding what I
want to do...They are incredibly clear and do not assume any knowledge at all
on the part of the user. I just follow them VERY carefully, and have solved
many problems that way...:-)...In this case I coudn't find one....And it is
SO much easier (and safer!) for us non-savy folks to have a reliable
accessory do registry stuff...

I agree with your last sentence completely. I even say that it's easier and
safer for *experts* to use TweakUI when it does what is wanted to be done.
No matter how good they may be, experts are not immune to making mistakes.

That's why I said "It's simply an easy, non-risky way to make those registry
changes."
