New Dell PC won't start user account

I have a Dimension 8300 3.2GHz which is only a few weeks old.
Just recently it has reached the choice of user account but the mouse will
not select either, although it still moves the cursor. No keyboard action
seems to work either. If I switch off/on a few times it will then work.

It has a remote mouse which has worked from new and since it moves the
cursor I don't suspect it now. Maybe I should try booting to safe mode
first - is that F8 as with other Windows versions?

Any suggestion would be well received.

P.S. I have posted to Dell Support also

Sorry, Dell is your only recourse for support. MS does not, cannot and will
not support OEM installations.

Hmm!

I guess every installation is an OEM one. Since MS don't make the PC's on
which the XP is installed, neither do they do the installing.

Maybe MS can deny any responsibility for the product once it leaves their
factory.

Mine isn't - well I'm the OEM, but I purchased a retail licence. Actually,
MS don't even assemble the discs - they merely supply the code - the OEM can
do whatever the hell they like. They aren't denying responsibility either -
you've not paid for them to take responsibility - the price of an OEM CD is
typically about £10-£20 inc VAT. All assembly is done by the OEM - MS
wouldn't recognise the code on the CD once Dell had finished with it!
