Coollector is a freeware video collection manager for Windows. Very
powerful, yet very easy to use, Coollector innovates by mixing
collection managing with several other helpful services. The resulting
combination goes well beyond collection managing, and provides the
movie lovers with an unprecedented experience.

Coollector will be released in a few weeks, but you can download a demo
(beta version).

I'd really like to hear what you think about this new concept. Thank
you very much for your comments and suggestions :))

I see you have put much work in your program, but I think there's a big
problem with your concept

YOU CAN'T HAVE IMAGES OF THE MOVIES

I have 200+ DVD and I can't do without images (now I use DVD Profiler).
Sorry, I hope you'll find users for your program anyway.
Good luck.

Hello Tim,
YOU CAN'T HAVE IMAGES OF THE MOVIES

Image support is already on my TODO list:
http://www.coollector.com/3.html

It's one of my top-priority improvements, and should be available in a
very near future. Anyway, I've decided to release Coollector with this
feature missing, because IMHO, it's not a show-stopper.

Thank you very much for your feedback, Tim. It was indeed a very good
point :)

Comment: Very nice use of the database, but there should be some way
(there is and I'm missing it?) of entering a movie that's not in the
database.

Question: Any chance of porting it to the PPC?

Hello Al,

No, you didn't miss it. It's yet another important feature which I have
to add as soon as possible. I admit it can be annoying, but I don't
think it's worth delaying the release of Coollector. Alright, the first
version of Coollector won't be absolutely perfect, but heck, it's only
a first version. I hope that people will enjoy Coollector very much in
spite of those temporary flaws.

Question: Any chance of porting it to the PPC?

GREAT chances ;-)

As you know, I only use highly cross-platform libraries (wxWidgets and
Metakit).

http://www.equi4.com/metakit.html/

The first portings will be for Mac and Linux, because they are
straightforward. But I have great expectancies with smartphones/PPC. It
would be so great to always have one's coollection with us !

1/ Coollector's interface is not that difficult to adapt to the smaller
screens of smartphones and Pocket PCs. It just has to display 1 panel
at a time (instead of 2 on the computer).

2/ the performance I got from Metakit is just amazing. I can't believe
it myself ! Coollector handles tens of thousands movies and persons,
and your computer don't even notices. I made the test with an old
Pentium 120, and the database access and searching are still
instantaneous (the only slowness recorded was due to screen drawing and
OS). That means that Coollector for smartphone/PPC doesn't need to be a
crippled version. Apart from the 1-panel interface and the (lack of)
internet access, it will be VERY close to the computer version.

Thank you very much for your time, Al. Much appreciated.

I wanted to say that your database can't contain the images because
there is too much movies, and the download would be enormous.
We'll have to find the images by ourselves ? Or you will provide links ?

We'll have to find the images by ourselves ? Or you will provide links ?

I'll try to spare you the details...

If you're connected to the web, Coollector will fetch the images
automatically, using an caching system like internet explorer. When you
look at a movie for the first time, it will download the image, and
write it to your hard drive. Even if you're online, it won't download
again images that are already in the cache. And if you work offline, it
can display the images that are in the cache.

There are several adjustments possible:
1/ limit the size on disk (for instance, no more than 100 MB cached on
disk)
2/ for people who are offline most of the time, there can be a batch
system that downloads the images for all the movies you own or have
rated.

P.S: it feels rather strange always talking about features not yet
available. Can I have your opinion about what's already there ?
Please...
:))
