We just bought a new computer. Our old one had WinXP pro installed. So does
the new one. How do we migrate a payroll program onto the new computer
without losing any data. Also what are the general guidelines with setting
up a new computer??

I wouldn't reccomend a full program migration (i.e picking it up and moving
it) because there will undoubtably be registry keys associated with the
program preventing it from running on a machine where they are not present.

In Payroll applications such as Sage Instant Payroll/Payroll/Payroll
Professional it is possible to perform a full backup of your data. Save
this data file to a CDR or floppy (depending on the size of your company
data) Install the same software on your new machine (taking into account
software licensing of course) and perform a 'Restore' from the backup file
from the old machine. This feature should be standard in many Accounting
applications as it should be recognised that company financial information
can be very valuable and should be regularly backed up.

In an ideal situation (usually in a LAN environment) it would be possible to
'Ghost' an entire Hard disk provided that the hardware on each machine were
identical. This essentially copies all data to an image file (which is
usually written accross several CDR's) which is then installed onto another
machine. If the computer is a member of a Domain or Workgroup, you must
logon as the local Administrator and change the computer name.

Hope this was of some help.

Hmm - this is a windows newsgroup - you need to ask the vendor of your
software "payroll" program the procedures for migrating the process from one
computer to another.

guidelines in your case...have a professional do it...caus if you have to
ask this....well....nuff said...and since it's a payroll thing....don't take
the chance...your goin save pennies...and spend dollars otherwise....

There is no one size fits all answer. I like the suggestion to call in
the pros and have them take care of it.

Generally it means installing the program on the new computer and then
copying the data files. That may sound less complex than it may turn out.

there is a third party program called aloha bob and that will will move over
apps and data perfectly. it is mostly used to transfer your setup from an
old computert to a new one
