I bought a new Sony PC from Best Buy yesterday. The
salesman told me that I must first download an XP upgrade
program from Microsoft.com, as well as a few other
programs. He said that I MUST do this on my old computer,
burn it onto 3 CDRWs, then install it onto my new computer
BEFORE I setup my new computer to the internet. He said
that with a cable modem it will take 6-8 hours to download
these upgrades, or he could sell me the disk for $25.00.
I see nothing on Microsoft.com indicating this. Can I
just setup my new computer and allow for the auto-update
feature that y'all have on yor web site?

Please advise.

The advice from the Best Buy salesman is dubious at best.
Your first priority should be to enable XP's firewall:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/

Afterward, visit the official Windows Update website and
scan your new computer for new updates and install them.

Carey is correct - as long as you know that most of those laptops/computers
from Best Buy, Circuit City, etc do NOT have anything more (if it even has)
than SP1 installed.

Meaning you are vulnerable to Blaster and Messenger Spam and an assortment
of other trojans/worms/etc if you hook it to the internet BEFORE turning on
the firewall and/or patching it.

Just get it yourself, before hooking it to the Internet, turn on the
firewall, hook it up then and go straight to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and download ALL of the critical
updates! Get your Antivirus software (whatever they gave you) updated and
registered!

Carey,

Please don't post the URL you used for Windows Update. It is going to
change and has done so for some of us already (XPSP2 etc) you should always
use http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and then you will be directed to the
appropriate one for your PC dependent on certain criteria specific to you
machine.
