I am upgrading to a new motherboard, processor and hard
drive. I need to re-install my existing copy of WinXP
professional on my new system.
What do I need to know/do to avoid problems with the
transfer of my currently registered copy of WinXP when I
am ready to activate WinXP on my new system?

Thanks for any help.

Good luck,I recently had to install a new
motherboard ,and have had nothing but trouble since!
I hope things go better for you.

First, understand that registration is not required, but activation is. If it has been over 120 days since your previous install the new system should activate with no additional actions required on your part. Otherwise, you will just need to call the toll-free number given you when activation fails, and explain about the system configuration and that the product is not active on any other computer. It's fairly easy, quick and painless.

You just go ahead and install on the new hardware. As long as it is a
retail XP, and not an 'OEM' one licensed only to the first machine it
was installed on, there is no problem (What constitutes a new machine
for an OEM one is a grey area, but I would think that as much change as
you propose would fall the wrong side of the line), When it comes to
activation, you may find it will go through on the net anyway - if more
than 120 days since you last did it certainly will. If not, you will
have to phone a toll-free number that will be given, to explain and swap
one long number for another to check back as you type it in
