Hi I am just about to upgrade to a new dual core 64 bit system, the problem I
have is that on the machine I have now the windows xp has been hard wired
into the computer.
I mean that it came with no disk and to reload it on this machine you press
a function button.
So my question is how do I move the genuine, up to date and licenced copy of
windows on this machine to my next one ?
Any ideas in," for dummy" format would be greatly appreciated.

You mean that you actually have a PC with WinXP Embedded? The OS is
stored on and runs from a microchip?

Actually, all that means is that you have an OEM (factory installed)
license for WinXP. It doesn't equate to "hard wired" in any technical
sense of the term.

You can't do that. By your own admission, you have an OEM licenses for
WinXP on your current computer. An OEM version must be sold with a
non-peripheral piece of hardware (normally a motherboard or hard rive,
if not an entire PC) and is _permanently_ bound to the first PC on which
it's installed. An OEM license, once installed, is not legitimately
transferable to another computer under _any_ circumstances.

You'll need to purchase a new WinXP license to go along with the new
computer.

Start considering how to get hold of an installation disk. Simply imaging
your current system to the new computer will not likely work.

The other thing you might consider is where the files are located on this
current hard drive that would be used for installation. Perhaps you could
copy them making a bootable CD. How would you be activating your XP
installation by the way. Were you given a product key?

It will cost only a few dollars more for the OEM dealer to add
an OEM version of Windows XP, along with the cdroms, and cheaper
than buying either an OEM version or full retail version on your
own. The existing copy of Windows XP, even though it is genuine
and licensed, is not transferrable from the old machine to the new.

You may only have a limited version of XP, ie tied to your bios. Time to
buy a real MS CD.
