I am in the market for a new computer for my son. The problem is that I
want Windows XP and not Vista. Almost all of the new computers seem to
come with Vista. Dell has a few with XP but only a couple of the
Optiplexes. Does anyone know of anywhere else that new computers can be
purchased with XP

You could look at the Dell Outlet. They have a lot of new Optiplex 745
systems ("Previously Ordered New"), with XP Pro, for about $250 less
than the closest equivalent Optiplex system with XP Pro.

I have the same issue, we need to get a new PC for my mother, and there
is no way she is going to learn how to use Vista. She'll go non-linear
at how different Vista looks.

Of course there is always the option of buying a copy of XP Pro for $100
or so, and installing it. This may be the cheapest option, considering
that the mass-market PCs all come with Vista Home Basic.

In addition to the suggestions you've already received, might I offer you
another approach?...

Assuming you live in a town or city that has one or more local computer
shops in business, why not purchase a computer for your son through that
source? Hopefully you'll make inquiries or have previous knowledge re the
reliability of the shop. In most cases they'll have a PC immediately
available to meet your requirements or be able to build one within a few
days to your son's specific needs. And at a price that will be reasonably
competitive with the mass-merchandise & online vendor models.

And when you consider the personal attention/support you should receive from
such a source, it would be wise in my view to at least check out a local
supplier.

One other suggestion...

If you do go that route, request the vendor to provide a retail copy of the
XP operating system (Home or Pro depending upon your son's needs). You will
incur an additional expense in so doing but it's worth the additional cost
in my view.
