Looking for a general procedure here. Getting a new
computer w/out XP installed. When I get my own XP, what
are the correct steps in setting this computer up.
For instance, do I format the hard disk first, install
drivers first, install Win XP first?
I am trying to head off problems. Any links or just type
the steps for me would be appreciated.
The computer is custom built.

I have installed Windows in the past, Windows upgrades in
the past, drivers in the past, but never started from
scratch. My current computer came with a partioned hard
drive but one partion was not formated. Xp took care of
that for me, as I let them install this version of XP
Home. We want to try XP Pro now. Your help would be
appreciated.

With a full version (non-upgrade) of XP Pro, simply boot from the CD and
perform the install ...

THANK YOU!

Turn on computer, insert XP CD.
Reboot.
Press a key to boot from CD when prompted.

If you're not prompted, enter your BIOS setup and change
the Boot Order to boot from CD before the hard drive.

When you boot from CD, the XP setup program will run and
allow you to partition/format the drive in the process of
installing.

THANK YOU FOR THE REPLY! but please bear with me just a
little...
If the drivers for the cdrw are not installed, will the
computer still take off and do what has to be done just by
installing the Win XP Pro (full version) and if economics
become an issue, Win XP home do the same?

This computer is being tested and then erased, leaving me
to figure out all the stuff vs. paying extra to have them
do it. They said with my knowledge, (I was specific on
what I wanted and what I know), they said I should have no
problem. I trust this forum more than I do sales people
trying to upgrade me and acting irritated...especially
when not buying the extended warranty stuff or their
programs with extras I do not want.

Xp will install the drivers for your cd-rw.

Umm, You can't install drivers until you have an OS installed :)

The XP CD is bootable and has everything you need to perform a clean
install. Get a Full Version XP as opposed to the cheaper Upgrade CD. An
upgrade CD requires that you have a previous OS to qualify the upgrade.
And, Stay away from OEM CD's. They have no Microsoft support and are
permantly tied to the frist PC you install it on. Even if your PC is
physically destroyed, you wouldn't be allowed to install XP on a new
system.
