I just re-installed XP Pro (finally after hours and hours of pulling my hair out over the missing or corrupted hal.dll message) Installation has finally been sucessfull but now Im stumped again...

Im at the welcome screen and it asking for the Administrator Password....I never set up any accounts during installation...or asigned a admin password...

I tried just hitting enter but no matter what I put in there I get the following error

The system cannot log you on due the following error
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted
Please try again or consult your system administrator

What do I do

Hi Ann,

Are you on a domain or is this a home system?
Did you repair install, clean install, or just install "over the top"?
Have you tried logging on to the local machine in Safe mode yet?

a] Try leaving the password field blank and simply hit the 'enter' butto

b] Try to Log in to any account that has Administrator access, use CTRL + ALT+ DEL to get the full list of users during boot-up if it doesn't show. Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel, select the administrator / user and change the password

c] At the log-in screen, press Ctrl/Alt/Del twice quickly, Type "Administrator" and leave password blank and simply hit the 'enter' button

Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel. Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel, select the administrator / user and change the password

d] Another option is to install Windows XP on another partition and move your data to the new partition and then format the old partition. After this you can then resize the partitions to make one large one

e] As a last resort you can reformat the disk and perform yet another a clean installation of Xp. Oh what a pain

After this is resolved, take precautions to not lose the password and make a Password Recovery Disk to avoid this again

good luc
