New APE audio extension

What on earth is the APE extension on an audio file? What is is, where
did it come from, and how do you work with it? Does this stuff never
stop mutating like a virus????

Your reference was for an Atari performance boost software....so much
for trolling google.
 
I'd run across monkeysaudio but was hoping for some other unbiased
source of information on how to decompress files in APE to mp3 format.
That's the thing that isn't so well discussed.

Well, their applet was painless but required a two-step process: their
applet converted ape to wav and then another applet converts wav to
mp3. Time consuming but painless.
