Then you have either made a mistake in the Username or password, or you
haven't set authentication properly. Re-check ALL the settings, and
compare them to the instructions from the ISP.

Presumably you have checked the box for remembering the username
and password. When you get that prompt for username/password,
click Cancel. An error message will appear. Right-click on your error
message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

Hi Helen. I am also setting up new mail account (Windows Mail, using OS Windows Vista) on new laptop. I have cable internet with wireless router, same ISP as before when using old laptop (Windows XP, Outlook Express). In Windows mail, when I click on the send/receive tab, a pop-up box is displayed asking me to confirm the email user and password settings. After these are typed in, the pop up box closes, and the server tries to connect. An error message is displayed

***Account: 'Windows Mail', Server: 'pop.west.cox.net', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR invalid user name or password.', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92***

I have called ISP 4 times today. They reset password, checked username and
cannot provide any more help. There is something fishy with this Windows
Security popup box.

My sister has an account on my laptop. She uses the fingerprint encryption
logon method which allows her to save all passwords using a fingerprint
swipe. Because of this, no pop up box is displayed when logs into Windows
Mail.

If anyone can help with this pop up box problem, let us know.

If you are sure you are you are entering the correct username and
password, one possible cause for that error is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
