Bought an Alienware last year and it came with only a ethernet card, no 56k modem. Recently bought one, only to find that when I try to connect to the internet, IE will open, and just before the page is all the way open, the PC will lock up. Just re-installed windows xp Pro., but still have the problem........not to mention this is the third modem I've tried. Would love to get online and check for updates, but my PC won't let me do it. Any other ideas, I'd love to hear em

Check that the modem is installed correctly

Go to Control Panel> Phone and Modem>
Clcik on Advanced Ta
Click on Propertie
Run Diagnostic

If all checks out fine, then Open I
Click on Tool
Internet Option
Click on Connection

Make sure that the dial up setting is correct and that there is only one dial up account set [as default

and 'Always Dial my default connection' is selected

Have ran the troubleshooter quite a bit, but haven't gotten any help from it. First 2 modems I tried were 3COM...1 external, the next one internal. Now trying to use a Creative v.92 PCI. Have ran the modem test, which checks out fine. Can connect to the internet, but as sign-in screen says "You have connected to the internet.", computer freezes. Still not sure if it's Windows XP Pro. problem, or maybe IE. Checked out the two links above and the tips from BAR, but still have problem. Can't seem to find any up-to-date drivers for a problem like this. Thank you guys for trying to help me out with a problem that has been going on for 2 weeks now, but no end in sight at the moment. PLZ!! feel free to keep posting suggestions, as I'm desperatly trying them all out.

Are you using the latest drivers?
If they cause problems, try looking for other drivers at

Good luck
