Trying to install a Maxtor ultra ata ide 200 gigabyte
drive. It needs to be partitioned and formatted. My old
one blew up, so no chance to transfer files & settings.

The PC won't boot with the XP disk, so I'm using the six
floppy setup boot disks. But I'm getting the blue screen
stop message: unmountable boot volume. A couple of
knowledgebase articles seem to deal with this (with
different explanations). One refers to using the recovery
panel, but selecting this option prompts for a disk: no
idea where to find that (a search throws up nothing).

Another KB suggestion is to turn off caching, etc. I am
using a new Gigabyte motherboard and it does not seem to
have controls for such things. Have tried failsafe
startup.

First you need to find out if the motherboard supports
that size hard drive and if so then try to create a
partition and format the drive. a windows 98 startup disk
or dos disk will boot your system and just run fdisk to
create the partition(s)

Hi, if the CD won't boot to XP then the win98 boot disc using cd drivers
should be ok. Then just navigate to the cd drive and run the XP setup.exe
file....
