Hi everyone - help and advice appreciated please.

I have two XP Home PC's in same room; want to share broadband internet
connection and folders/files on both PC's.
Have connected both PC's up to router (apparently correctly) as both PC's
can individually access different internet pages and can successfully ping
each other.
Two Problems: a) One PC cannot be set up using xp network setup wizard. It
goes through the sequence correctly, finishes the process and in My
Computer/Properties/Computer Name shows that it has been set up on a network
but this does not show in My Network Places, neither does the second PC.
b) The second PC has set itself up correctly using xp network setup wizard
but that PC does not have a 'shared documents' folder into which folders for
sharing can be dragged/dropped. The second PC does appear in its own Network
Places but the first computer does not.

The computer names are different but the workgroup name is the same.

Recommendations welcome!

Do you have "File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks" installed under
your Network Properities?

I assume both computers are running xp operating system. the only time I
have ever seen the problem you describe is on a 98 machine when you do not
log in. you can surf the internet but can not connect on a local network.

try this find the IP address of both computers. for XP go to start run CMD
then type IPCONFIG

it will probably be something like 192.168.2.X

For Win 98 the command is winipcfg

once you know the IP address make sure the XP firewall is off

make sure your username and password for both computers are the same

open Internet Explorer and enter the IP address of the computer that has the
folder that is shared from the other computer

Enter the address in this format \\192/168.2.X or whatever you IP address
is.

That should take care of it.

When you see the shared folder you can right click and choose map network
drive or you can add it as and Internet Explorer favorite
