Hi

sbs 2003 network. We have a client pc which is just too far away. Is there
a way to extend the length of the netwrok cable by using some sort of
extender hardware? Would appreciate some recommendations.

Thanks

Regards

Fiber? You can get converters, or a NIC and a hub/switch.

Put a UTP hub/switch in the middle of the cable run?

Use thicknet?

Wireless?

How far is too far away? Longer than your network cable or longer than the
ethernet spec allows for? (which I think is 100M).

Assuming standard CAT5/6 cabling then you can join two lengths of cable
together with a suitable connector, provided the total length stays below
100M (and if you are using a connector you might find the maximum length is
diminished).

Otherwise as JohnO has already replied, you could use a hub (or switch) as a
repeater. Be aware that there is a limit in the number of hubs you can have,
and I think its two between client and a router.

Hope this helps.

Brian is correct concerning the # of hubs on a segment..
Also you will encounter greater broadcast traffic with a hub, use a switch
they are cheap, and control traffic better than a hub.

I've previously found a specialised network extender that can extend
Ethernet to 800 feet or another one to 1 mile.

Regular CAT5+ cable should reach around 90m or more. If your run is
shorter than that, you should test the cable/ends.
If it is not much further than that (or twice that), you could put a cheap
switch in the run somewhere to cut the cable length on each side of the
switch to a workable distance. This could even be repeated with a couple
of switches.
If the run is a lot further, it may be worth going to fibre (depending on
type, this could be good for 1000s of meters). This would be more
expensive, as you would need switches with fibre ports or converters or
fibre NICs at the ends, as well as the fibre itself.
