Can a small home network be set up using two computers
one using XP professional and the other 2000? If so how?

Yes it can. and as your xp is professional they can both become members of a domain( xp home cannot join a domain). Set up the two pcs, create a domain on either pc then join the other to it.

It isn't possible to set up a domain using only XP Professional and
2000 Professional. A domain requires a computer running Windows NT
Server, Windows 2000 Server, or Windows Server 2003.
