I am having problems sharing a printer and disks, my PC's have XP, 2 have
Pro, the third, and less important has home.

How do I share Printers, and I have enabled the sharing in the properties,
and how do I share disks, yes the sharing has been enabled, but NO JOY!.

If I didn't know better, I'd say Microsoft are trying to make it hard...

Actually, networking is pretty easy so you must be doing something
wrong. Here are a few sites about home networking to help you:

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/

Hint: all computers must have unique names, be in the same Workgroup,
same network (i.e., 192.168.1.xxx), same subnet. You don't say how
you're connecting, so I'm assuming ethernet to a hub, switch or router.

Hi,

Thank you for the posting.

When you try to share a folder, the Share this folder on the network check
box may be unavailable, and because of this, you may be unable to create
the share. This issue can occur because file sharing is not available until
the Network
Setup Wizard has been run on Windows XP-based computers that are members of
a workgroup (not a member of a domain).

To resolve this issue, run the Network Setup Wizard:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network
Connections.

2. Double-click Set up at home or small office network.

3. Complete the Network Setup Wizard by making the appropriate choices for
your network configuration.

To share the printer, open the Printers and Faxes folder on the computer
that was connected to your printer.

To open the Printers and Faxes folder
" Click Start and then click Control Panel.
" Click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
" In the Printers and Faxes folder, I clicked the printer's icon and, in
the tasks pane, I clicked Share This Printer.
" Opened the printer's Properties dialog box, and clicked on the Sharing
tab.
" Clicked Share Name, and then clicked OK.

After that the printer will be available for other computers to use.

To connect to the printer
" Opened Control Panel, and clicked Printers and Other Hardware.
" Clicked Add a Printer.
" Clicked Printer Connection and then browsed the network for the printer.

If you cannot print to the network printer, please verify that basic
network connectivity is working. Check user rights, protocols, share names,
and so on to make sure that you can connect to the print server. Copy files
to a share on the print server by using Windows Explorer. If you cannot
gain access to the server, you may not be able to gain access to the
printer.

As for share disk, root partitions and volumes are shared as the drive
letter name appended with the $ sign. For example, drive letters C and D
are shared as C$ and D$. The PRINT$ share is used for the remote
administration of printers. For example, you can try \\computername\C$ to
access.

Hope the above information and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Cherry Qian
