is it possible to set up a network similar to nt, where a designated computer
acts as a server, and the profiles & user details are stored there, controls
access to the net etc etc,

basically i'm planning on getting a couple of lap tops but wish to use my
current base unit as a server.

thanks
Chris

It sounds like you are wanting to setup a domain. If this is the case, you
will need to make sure your laptops are running XP Pro because XP home
cannont be a member of a domain. With XP pro you shouldn't have any problems.

If you have XP home and don't want to create a domain, you can still network
them sharing files / printers on your base unit. I just don't think you can
maintain the user profiles on a server in a work group environment.

as it happens i am using xp pro, and intend to go for pro on the laptops, is
it an easy thing to do (create a domain)???

if so how would i go about...

One additional note: XP (Home or Pro) can't act as a domain controller
(the designated server that maintains profiles and user details).
That requires a server operating system: Windows NT Server, Windows
2000 Server, or Windows Server 2003.

Well then you need a Windows "server" version. NT will not be supported
after the end of this year. XP Pro is not a server, but can join a
domain. XP Home cannot join a Windows domain (and file/printer sharing is
limited to 5 connections at a time).
