Have 2 comps hooked together with a Linksys router. XP can see ME but ME
cannot see XP. File and print sharing is active on both, no firewalls are
running. I'm thinking its a port issue with the router. If so, what ports do
I open? Or could it be something else?

Bob,

Two computer connected thru a router (both on the LAN?) are connected as with a
switch. There are no port issues here.

With Windows ME and Windows XP on a LAN, only one should run the browser, which
is the program that lets each see the other.

Thanks for the response Chuck. I tried a few things after reading the info in
your links. I disabled the Master Browser on the ME comp. Changed the node
type setting in the registry from 0 to 1 and enabled WINS Proxy routing on
the XP comp. Both comps can ping one another so I know the connections there.
But I still get the Unable to browse the network error on the ME comp. Should
I delete all the networking services, protocols and such from both comps and
start from scratch?

Bob,

What firewalls are not running on the computers? Read the rest of the article:

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html

Let's look at "browstat status", "browstat listwfw" (read instructions!),
"ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from the XP
computer, and "ipconfig /all" from the ME computer, so we can diagnose the
problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

also , is there at least one file/folder shared on each computer ?

OK, here we go. Yes, I do have folders shared on both comps. The firewalls I
use are F-Secure (from charter) on ME and Zone Alarm on XP. I unload F-Secure
and shut down Zone Alarm plus disconnect my modem from the router.

Bob,

You're behind a router. You don't need IPX/SPX (NwlnkIpx).

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html

And tell us about the Ethernet drivers on Arthur.
1 Ethernet adapter :
Description . . . . . . . . : F-Secure Corp.
2 Ethernet adapter :
Description . . . . . . . . : PPP Adapter.

You're getting service thru
0 Ethernet adapter :
Description . . . . . . . . : NDIS 5.0 driver

With the other 2 adapters in the mixture, browsing (the ability to see the other
computer) is bound to be flaky. Consider the examples, in my articles.
