I am working at a business and many of the computers here
are having issues with the network. Most of the
computers here run Windows XP. When the computer is
turned on, it boots rather rapidly to the login screen.
Once the password is entered and the computer starts up
though, it hangs on "loading personal settings" for about
a minute.
After reading up, I got bootvis from Microsoft in order
to find out what was wrong. The file which is giving me
the most problems is mrxsmb.sys which slows the computer
down by about 60 seconds. I tried turning off and
turning back on "file and printer sharing" which is the
solution I have seen on every other page on google.
Each computer is connected to a fileserver which runs
Windows2000 Server.
Another (possibly related) issue is that on boot, there
is a red X on each of the 3 network drives which are
mounted from that server. I have told it to reconnect at
startup, but Windows wont properly mount it until I
double click on the drive icon. I even created a little
script (net use "...") to try and access the drive so
that the little X goes away, and added it to the registry
to run at boot. That worked for a few days upon bootup,
but now those Xs back again.
And let me take this time to complain about Microsoft
wanting to charge me $245 bucks to fix their bugs. I can
understand resorting to email support on Linux (when the
software is free), but not when there are over 50
computers here running their product. There is no excuse
for a >60 second boot delay. Things are supposed to
shoot error messages that take that long, rather than
take the head in the sand approach.
