I used to be able to network 2 XP Home machines, one with a wireless
connection to a router, the other, a desktop, using a cable. It worked
well without knowledge on my part the machines just seemed to "find"
each other. Now, having re-formatted and re-installed XP on the
desktop they don't seem to "see" each other. The Work Group name is
the same on both, each has a different name. No joy here.

Any suggestions?

Do the machines by chance have the same IP address? A computer name is
merely an alias for the IP address; that they have different names is not
important.

Check your firewall settings on the desktop machine.

Good luck

David,

Check for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and for registry setting
restrictanonymous, on each computer.
Misconfigured / overlooked firewalls:

Registry setting restrictanonymous:

If no help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as
a diagnostic aid. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely:

Please let us know if any of these suggestions are of any help. What you learn
may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.

Thanks to you all, didn't think of the firewall. As to the IP
addresses I havn'e a clue. Before doing the re-installation on the
desktop the machines connected without any input from me. I guess I
expect too much. Will find out about IP addresses.

OK, David. Please let us know how it turns out.
