Jeff,
All of the above are good things to check, but you have to do each when
necessary, and know how to interpret the results. Let's start from the
beginning. Read my article on solving network problems first.

Next, read my article on troubleshooting Network Neighborhood. Consider each
problem, and test each possible solution, one at a time.

And some background about your network, its history, and its logical and
physical setup, would be very useful here.

I have changed both the names and workgroup names, to no avail. both
computers were running fine last week, i installed sp2 on both and it went
fine, have since reinstalled sp2 on both and it gives same problem. When i
try to use my network neighborhood or the run command and go to desktop from
laptop, guest to host, it says may not have permission to access network,
usually says rpc failed. when i repair connection on guest it usually gets an
arp cache failed to clear. i have turned guest on using command and can ping
in both directions, firewall is windows xp sp2. i have trend micro pccillin
2006 for antivirus with firewall not on. i have completely removed antivirus
from both computers and ran just using windows firewall with no internet
hooked up, just in case, and get pings in both directions but only host to
guest file sharing. i cannot get guest to host sharing or internet to work
except a couple of times. i don't know why it has only worked a couple of
times, once i did a repair and the other i completely removed everything,
reinstalled and it worked for about an hour. shut off laptop and came back
hours later turned on and it wouldn't work, even after i let it sit for an
hour, over the 51 minutes to recognize it on host.
