How can I network my desktop and laptop via USB ports? Both have
ethernet cards. But I want them to be connected even while one is
connected to net through ethernet. Can this be done just by way of a
cable?
Would like to get advice,
Thanx in advance.

Not sure. It may be possible, but I'd avoid it even if it were. I'd get a
small consumer-grade firewall/router appliance for your broadband - and most
of these have built-in Ethernet switches, so you can plug in all computers
to network them and share the Internet connection.

Why on earth would you want to use USB when you've got Ethernet? Plug
them both into Ethernet and they can talk to each other or to the net at
the same time. If you haven't got a spare port on your Ethernet device
(i.e. router or whatever), then you need an Ethernet switch or hub.

It woild be a lot simpler, and safer, if you used a router. I've seen D-Link 4 port routers for
as little as $20.00. Check http://www.ebay.com

Thanx for reply.
Ethernet switch or hub is a costlier option than a cable. Hardware
thingies are costly in this part of the world. I assume there might be
some cable with inbuilt adapter for this purpose. Maybe someone can
offer help about this.

If you think that, then obviously you have never bothered to look at the
prices of USB network cables..

That just networks the two computers and does not allow for an internet
connection unless dialup is used, or a second NIC is installed that connects
to the internet..

You are correct. Misinterpreted the question.

There is / was a serial cable network solution, but the
software-- if you can find it-- would be more costly than
the ethernet hub.

And if you order an ethernet hub on the web, it could be
drop-shipped to you rather cheaply. As in, under $10.

Good luck!

There are often strict restrictions to sending networking items to foreign
countries. The poster here lives in India. A package sent would take 4 to
6 weeks and would cost around $40.00 probably, which isn't bad if you can
wait the time, but it is at least and most likely more than what the router
itself would cost.

To get a package there sooner would cost significantly more, but there is
still the restriction of sending electronic stuff overseas.
