I am hoping that someone may be able to help me. When I try to open up my
network places and then try to view the workgroup computers I get this
message....
_____ is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available.
This is occuring on the host computer which has XP OS, I upgraded my laptop
with XP as it was previously running 98 as I thought this may help. I cannot
connect to the internet on the client computer and am wondering if the
message on the host is the indication of the problem. We are just home users
and have previously had these computers networked before. The host computer
has been upgraded with an ASUS motherboard and an Athlon CPU, Could this have
anything to do with the problem? I am at a loss as to what else to try I have
looked at previous posts and there suggestions, looked at all the websites
suggested and attempted some of the suggestions there. So if anyone has
anymore ideas, please help.

I have just now gone through this web site again as I stated previously I had
already looked at the web sites suggested on previous threads. I would
appreciate maybe a more specific answer to my problem, maybe there is a
microsoft techie that could help! I am getting really frustrated with this
problem, it has now been over a month that we have been trying to set these
computers up and networked. I use the client computer for my Uni studies and
am desperate to sort this out soon.......so can anyone offer any more
solutions pleaseeeeeeee

I'll try and at least at the end point you in a different, hopefully
fruitful, direction.
(snip)

No, the change in motherboard and hardware has nothing to do with the
networking unless the drivers for the network card (onboard probably?)
didn't get properly picked up. Look in Device Manager and make sure all
hardware is working correctly. In addition, here are some things to
check:

1. Make sure that you have identical user accounts and passwords on both
machines.

2. Make sure that any firewalls you have are properly configured to
allow lan traffic. If your XP boxen have Service Pack 2, be aware that
SP2 automatically enables the Windows Firewall. If you are not running
a third-party firewall, go to the Windows Firewall applet in Control
Panel and enable File & Printer Sharing on the Exceptions tab. If you
are using a third-party firewall (and have properly configured it to
allow your lan traffic as Trusted), then turn the Windows Firewall off.
You don't want two firewalls running, and a third-party program will be
better than the WF. All firewalls must be properly configured to allow
lan traffic as Trusted.

3. Look at the networking properties on both machines. You should only
have these components installed:

TCP/IP protocol
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
(the QoS is optional and you don't need it, but it doesn't mess you up
either)

Remove these components if they are present:

IPX/SPX protocol
NetBEUI protocol
Client for NetWare networks

4. For ease of use, put both machines in the same workgroup and make
sure they have unique computer names.

5. Make sure you have set up ICS IP addresses, gateway, etc. correctly.
I understand that you are not happy about going to a website for help,
but here is a link to MVP Steve Winograd's article about setting up
ICS:

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/

It will make the process completely clear to you far better than I could
in this post. Please try Steve's site and then if you are still having
problems, come back with what is going on with your network and we will
help you some more.

This being Usenet, your previous problem reports are not obvious (did you use a
different nym maybe?). Please provide ipconfig information for each computer, so
we can see where to begin diagnosing the problem.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

I have a similar problem. I cant find an answer any where, even after reading
all the posts here and going to the site suggested by Blair. I can ping all
three win xp machines on my small network, using a switch, I can see them on
the workgroup, but i cant share anything on any of the machine. I get an
access denied error message.

The firewall is turned off. all the shares have been done fine as we could
share files earlier up to some point. I have re-shared and re-set the
workgroup, but nothing doing. I have scanned for viruses, and tried almost
everything that i can think of. Please let us get someone with some helpful
tip somewhere. I have even taken care of the issues on kb article 304040
(which I know by heart by now!).
Just what is this about?

Evans,

The "Access denied" aka error 5 can have several causes. You'd be doing
everybody, including yourself, a huge favour if you would start a new thread,
with a unique and descriptive subject, so we can help you better.

I was having the same problem just tonight. I reinstalled my windows xp
becuse of some issues and lost the computer that I reinstalled it on. I was
getting that error. The way I solved my might work for you. I am not as
smart as the guys who gave you the info earlier but my idea worked. I am
connected to the internet through a linksys router. I ran the software to
reconfigure the linksys and the computer. I then ran the network setup on
the working computer and created a setup disk to use on the other computer.
The problem afte that was now the new one was listed but the working one
wasn't so I used the disk to run setup on the working computer and holy crap
it worked. I hope this helps. Again I am not a networking wiz, but the more
I read about all this ip config and domains and stuff I got to thinking that
maybe the computer and the router aren't exactly matching. Oh well right
back if you try this and it works maybe I just solved a big issue for
microsoft and they can add it to their support page.
