This would have been the simplest thing to set up with
Win2K, half an hour or so. 1 PC, a 2.1Ghz P4, next,
Thinkpad 2Ghz laptop, a DSL modem, and a Linksys BEFSR41
NAT/router/whastever!

Laptop, and tower are cabled to the router. modem is also
cabled into the router, then to the wall. Internet
sharing works like a champ, it's perfect.

I have downloaded the P2P networking pack for XP and
installed on both PC's. The best I've ever done here is
for both PC's to BRIEFLY appear in the same window in Net
Neighborhood, have NEVER seen files from one to the
other, or printer, or anything. I have tried SO many
different things, except the one I should actually do -
that is go back to Windows 2000 Pro. HELP!!!

Either A: go back to W2
or
B: Check for firewalls and disable them. If you have any firewall software installed then uninstall it
Can you ping the other machine
Same workgroup name
Same IP range
Same subnet mask?
