Networking NTSF and FAT32

I am networking two computers. I have no problems reading disks and
partitions back and forth except for one partition, which happens to be
fat32. I cannot read this one partition from the other computer. I have
checked to make sure all permissions are OK.

Andrew, that is irrelevant for files shared over a network. KSB - please
post back with more information about the two computers. Let us know
what error messages you get, what operating systems (and Service Pack
levels if XP) they are running, and where this particular partition
that you are having trouble with is. It makes no difference if you are
trying to get files from a machine with a hard drive formatted FAT32 or
from a machine with a hard drive formatted in Reiser (Linux). Something
else is wrong but we don't have enough information so far to help you.

This may seem strange, but when I went to get the error message, the problem
went away. That's what I love about computers; everything is so logical,
straightforward and simple. :)

More nonsense from Andrew E., our resident provider of misinformation.

FAT32 and NTFS are file systems. File systems don't read files, operating
systems do.

Windows XP can read NTFS, FAT12, FAT16, or FAT32 in any and all
combinations, regardless of what file system it itself is installed on.

A computer running Windows 98, for example, can't locally read from an NTFS
partition, but that's a limitation of Windows 98, not of FAT32.

Moreover, in KSB's situation, it doesn't matter at all. He's taklking about
reading files across a network. When you read files across a network, the
file system doesn't matter at all, because it's just the data which is
transferred across the network, not its underlying file system. Windows 98
(which can *not* read NTFS files natively) has no problem accessing files
across the network, even if they are stored on NTFS devices.

You just have to speak nicely to them and carry a big screwdriver. ;-)

Glad it's all fixed, however it happened!
