This is probably and easy one. My host computer has no issues connecting to
the net. The client computer on the network, however, cannot access the net,
nor my shared files. I've run the network setup wizard on both computers,
the internet connection is set up to be shared, there are no firewalls to
stop it, and I've tried releasing/renewing the IP address. It worked earlier
today before I did Windows Updates on the client computer. I've done
everything I can think of and even went through the Windows Network
Troubleshooter with no results.

Drew,

Please start by checking registry setting restrictanonymous:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html>

If no help there, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (and don't make any changes after):

<SNIP browstat and ipconfig>

Drew,

Well, to start with, both CATHAINE and Hal-9000 have elected themselves master
browsers. That will prevent each from seeing the other in Network Neighborhood.
But is that the actual / only problem, or just another symptom? Try stopping
the browser service on CATHAINE, and see if the NN problem is resolved.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>

Of course, that doesn't explain an Internet problem with CATHAINE. Try pinging
CATHAINE and Hal-9000 from each other, by name and by ip address, and let us
know the success / failure.

Then take a look at Windows Update, and make a list of WHAT updates were
installed most recently.

I disabled the browser service on CATHAINE as per the instructions on your
blog. No change after 1 hour. Ping on CATHAINE to HAL-9000 results
negative. Ping the other way results in an error message, like the ping
command is corrupted or something. Says The NTVDM CPU has encountered an
illegal instruction. CS:10e2 IP:0104 OP:ff fd 1f 58 5d

Not entirely sure I shut the browser service down correctly, looked in the
admin tools/services and didn't see 'browser' lister.

Found the listing as "Computer Browser". It is stopped. I also disabled it
just now to make sure.

Drew,

Can you find an Event Log entry for the NTVDM error?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-event-viewer-to-get-details.html>

No log entry listed. Dang I wish this was a normal chatroom so that the flow
of information could go faster.

Earlier, when I ran WU on CATHAINE, there were a ton of sercurity fixes. It
hadn't been updated for a while since I had to update the updater.
Everything was working relatively fine before the updates. There was a
driver update for the NIC. I thought that might've been the problem, so I
rolled the driver back first thing to check. No dice on that. There must've
been something in the updates that it didn't like.

Drew,

I can do IM if you wish. Or you can look at Windows Update, and the list under
"Review Your Update History".

Did you look under all 3 Event Viewer branches - Application, Security, and
System?

If nothing yet, you'll probably end up rolling all updates back, then you'll
have to apply a few (maybe 1 months worth) at a time, and test after each set of
updates. Waiting several months between applying updates is a bad idea - you
have to keep the updates manageable.

If you're lucky, you should be able to run System Restore to just before the
updates were run.

Did you accept a driver update for your nic from Microsoft? That's not a good
idea either. If Windows Update tells you there's a driver update, you can take
it as an alert, but always get the actual updates from the vendor. And always
apply updates in manageable chunks.

Yes, I installed the microsoft version. Once the problems started, I rolled
it back. I'm about to try a SR soon. I'm in the Microsoft Community Chat
(Expert Zone Chat Room) right now. Getting some advice from them, but not
much. They don't seem very mature.

I looked under all events in all areas for today and found no record. I
even did one while it was pulled up and it didn't show up.

I did a system restore and that was no good. I can ping the client from the
host, but it does not appear on the network. The client cannot ping the host
nor see it on the network. When the client is hooked directly to the
internet, it connects fine. I've even deleted all my network connections and
re-initialized them, just to see if that would do anything. I'm fast-running
out of options.

Has the NTVDM error gone away (and if not can you please copy the precise
contents)?

If you truly have ping connectivity, but no visibility in Network Neighborhood,
then go thru my Network Neighborhood Troubleshooting guide, link by link.
Troubleshoot from the bottom up.

Drew,

Going back and looking at "browstat status" for Hal-9000 way back, I see a long
list of transports.

What's all that? Do you have a lot of uninstalled network drivers or something?

Anyway, Microsoft just sent me a super sized version of browstat, called
"browdeb". If I can email it to you, it may give us a clue. If you're willing,
email your address to me per my sig below (please DO NOT write my address, or
yours, here).

HALLELUAH! It seems that merely setting my connection to the Client and the
Net to allow NetBIOS seemed to have cured everything. Both computers have
net access, they ping each other, and they see each other on the network.
Thank you ever so much!

That's awesome! Thanks for letting us know!
