I am having problems with 2 computers on my company's domain, so far it
is just 2. Both are Windows XP SP2 Gateway computers with current
updates and drivers. The problem I am having is that they randomly
lose their ability to connect to shared resources on the network such
as network drives etc... when the users log on. Yet when this happens
the internet will still work fine. Also when this happens, other users
can access drives fine etc... it is specific to these 2 machines.
When I go to look at the Computer Name tab under My Computer properties
I get a message saying Networking is not installed or configured
properly. Regardless if I sign is as local admin or a domain admin I
get the same error. If I restart 2 or 3 times everything appears to be
working again. Then if you log off and back on once its working it
stops working and you have to reboot a few times again to get it to
work. If I try to command line a server share such as \\severname\ I
get an error saying it is unaccessible.
I have updated/reinstalled the network card drivers, made sure services
like Server and Windows Time had started properly etc... but nothing
seems out of the ordinary. I uninstalled and reinstalled Client for
Microsoft Windows but that does not seem to help at all.
I am at a loss at to why this happens. All users have valid Active
Directory accounts and it's usually a hit or miss thing as to when it
happens. I have been searching google but have not really found an
answer. Some mention it might be a Symantec problem and I will try to
uninstall and reinstall that while I wait for some help. Any ideas as
to what might be causing this? I would like to find a resolution in
case the problem gets worse.
Thanks.
