Networking ignorance

Would appreciate some advice on the correct way to set-up a Home
Network that will enable me access to the Program Files and Documents
& Settings folders (and all subdirs). PCs with Windows XP Professional.

Set up is
2 PCs each connected via ethernet cable to a Modem/Router (aka gateway)

If there is an easily understandable tutorial on this subject, I would
appreciate
a link.
