Networking- how to prevent both PC's starting

When I start my laptop(XP) the client PC desktop(98SE) also starts. How can
I prevent this happening?

Go into the desktop computer's BIOS setup program and disable "Wake on
LAN".

I found the wake up on LAN already disabled but I noticed the next item was
Wake up by PCI card and this was enabled.
Would that affect the result?

I'm sorry, but I don't know. A sure way to find out is to disable the
"PCI card" setting and see what happens.

After trying all the suggestions I have received, when I booted up this
morning on my laptop the desktop did not start!!
