Hi people, I'm having some major problems with home networking, and
can't see any way out.
I have a home 802.11g network, with two PCs (one running XP home, SP2;
and the other running XP pro SP1) and one laptop (running XP home,
SP2.)
These are networked through a belkin wireless router.

All three computers are configured for internet access and fiel
sharing, and all three can go online.

The problem comes with trying to file share - although I have enabled
file sharing of My documents on all the computers:

All three computers can access files on the PC running XP home; but
they can't access the PC running XP pro, or the Laptop, running XP
home. You can view all three computers on the workgroup, but when you
try to access them, the error:

"\\laptop is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this
network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions.

Access is denied."

I can, however, ping all three computers, from cmd.

All three computers are running Zone Alarm firewall, but i get the same
error if I disable the firewall (both zone alarm, and the XP firewall)
on all the computers.

This seems to be a fairly common problem online, and i've tried all the
solutions that i've come across, including trying to access them
directly, through typing in \\laptop in the run command line.
I've also tried disabling simple file sharing on the XP pro PC;
checking access rights on the XP pro PC (these are set to all users,)
Running the netsh command line tool on all the computers running SP2
Running the ntrights command line tool on all the computers

I've also enabled guest accounts on all the computers, they all have
user accounts with the same user name and password as well

Please help, i've been trying to get this sorted out for days, and it's
really annoying me!

cheers,
Manpreet

Manpreet,

The error "...not accessible...access is denied" can have several causes.
Depending upon what the cause is, you'll have to fix each one. You can't just
try one thing on then off.

You also can't run both Zone Alarm and Windows Firewall at the same time. And
disabling Zone Alarm causes problems sometimes.

Please start by un installing Zone Alarm, completely.
http://nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/Prod_1/Articles55646/CompleteUninstallNonNT.html
http://www.donhoover.net/uninstall.html

Next, disable Windows Firewall.

On the XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro
on a LAN with XP Home, you need to have SFS enabled.

On XP Home, and on XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest, with Start - Run -
"cmd", then type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window. Ensure
that the password for Guest is blank, with Start - Run - "control
userpasswords2"; select Guest, click Reset Password, click OK without entering a
new password.

On XP Pro, if you're going to use Guest authentication, check your Local
Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment,
on the XP Pro computer, and look at "Deny access to this computer from the
network". Make sure Guest is not in the list. Look at "Access this computer
from the network", and make sure that Everyone is in this list.

Finally, check for a browser conflict. The Microsoft Browstat program will show
us what browsers (I'm not talking about Internet Explorer here) you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.
For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:

Okay, I've done all the things suggested above - completely uninstalled
zone alarm on all the computers, disabled the windows firewall, and set
the guest accounts, with no passwords - with no difference.
When I check the browser response, i get different statuses. On the
mainlounge PC (running XP Home SP2), browstat status says:

"Browsing is active on the domain.
Master Browser name is: MAINLOUNGE
Master browser is running build 2600

There are 1 domains in domain MSHOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{9CA5EF38-35B5-45D7-8D35-5B9B4CBDCD98}"

The other two computers (the laptop running XP home, and the PC running
XP Pro - the two computers who's files cannot be accessed) both show:
"Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: MAINLOUNGE
Could not correct to registry, error = 53 Unable to determine
build of browser master: 53

The other PC (running XP pro) shows the same message, only the
transport is different:

What's the next step?

OK, Manpreet,

All 3 computers recognise MAINLOUNGE as the master browser, and all 3 know each
other's presence ("3 servers").

An "error = 53" is name not found, ie, inability to resolve address of target.

Provide ipconfig information for each computer, as a start, and we'll analyse
the problem.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.
6) Identify operating system (by name, version, and Service Pack level) with
each ipconfig listing.

Manpreet,

Laptop is running Teredo Tunneling, aka IPV6. Do you need access to IPV6
addresses?

Please start by un installing IPV6, aka Advanced Networking, from the list of
items under Local Area Connection Properties. You only need the following items
in the list:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Then restart Laptop, rerun ipconfig for all 3 computers, and post updated
ipconfigs.

Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then
Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into
Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder

Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

Manpreet,

The "system error 5" is "access denied". You have either misconfigured
firewalls, or one registry setting, to deal with.

First, look at registry key [HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value
restrictanonymous, on each computer.
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/regentry/46688.asp>
<http://www.jsifaq.com/subf/tip2600/rh2625.htm>
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246261
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296403

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might
help:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp>
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry>

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

Next, do any of the computers have, or ever in the past had, any personal
firewall? Misbehaving / misconfigured firewalls are a very common cause of
problems.
