new xp guy

need help networking from windows xp to windows 98.
windows 98 machine was set up on a tcp/ip lan network and
has 10/100 ethernet installed.

i do not have a floppy drive on the xp machine, so cannot
create a network settings disk.

the xp instructions state that i can run my xp cd in the
98 machine and set up the network, however the new xp
system does not come with a full xp cd and the 98 machine
won't recognize the suppiled cd.

i am thinking it is possible to map from the 98 machine
to the xp, but do not know how to do this.

any ideas?

There's no need to run the xp network setup on the 98 computer.
Configure 98 manually. Go to Control Panel | Network and:

1. Install these network components if they're not already present:
a. Client for Microsoft Networks
b. TCP/IP
c. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

2. Click the Identification tab and specify the computer name and
workgroup name. XP's default workgroup name is MSHOME.

3. Configure TCP/IP to obtain an IP address automatically.

4. Right click and share any desired disks, folders, and printers.
