networking for beginners

Can i create a username and password on xp pro and be able to log in on any
pc or do i need a server? we have about 20 pc's all with xp pro in our small
home office

You can set the File Sharing on all Network computers and you will be able
to log.

However WinXP Pro can maintain only 10 concurrent Network Connections.
You should look into Windows 2003 SBS,
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/default.mspx , and switch to
a Real Sever topology.

If you are asking whether or not you can create a user acct on one XP Pro
machine and log on to any of the other 19 XP Pro machines in your office, and
get same user settings and docs, the answer is no. To do that, you need
Windows Server 2003 and you need to set up roaming user profiles.
