Hi guys,

With my new rig in the making I am considering to get Vista installed.

Any other machine on my network is XP

So is networking using RDP, sharing files and folders between XP and Vista fairly simple and easy to configure?

How are your other rigs networked now..?

well atm it is all wireless
except the xboxes which are wired

all go through a router

ah come on then guys

If I am using a laptop with XP and I want to remote into my desktop that has Vista will that work?
Vice versa?

How is networking between the two operating systems?

i dont know if there is any VNC software for vista, there definitely is for XP though as i've used it before

if you just want to share files between the computers, mapping the drives would be the easiest option

do you know about remote desktop on vista?

i wonder if this is compatible with XP RDP.

I reckon VNC will work no problem. I will have to try it and find out for myself I guess.
Surely there must be someone here with vista and XP!

Four machines here, one of them Vista, two using XP and one has about four different OS's.

To talk between XP and Vista will take more messing about than between XP & XP but it's easily doable, mine are all working fine, Linksys wireless network.

Windows 98 doesn't like the wireless and I'm at this moment messing with PC Linux OS 2008.1 and so far it has actually seen the network, I'm just having problems configuring it, atm I can't get online. But that's Linux, so don't worry ;)

So Flopps what kind of changes should I prepare for?

I remember when you first changed to Vista you were disliking it a lot. Feeling better now?

oh and as for Linux try typing in:

service network restart and tell me what you see!!

haha

Read my sticky thread in the Vista section for further enlightenment.

My main gripes were mostly hardware related as I recall, lack of drivers, and also the fact some of my games wouldn't work within Vista.

I do like Vista now, yes, I like it a lot, but it's not without it's niggles.

I don't like the way it's slow in opening folders on non primary hard drives and I don't like the navigation so much as XP, between sections, like Documents, Pictures, Hard Drives and stuff. I sometimes get the feeling that it was change for change's sake, no real advantage.

And the popups warning you about stuff could drive you barmy unless you disable them.

But all in all, I'm glad I bought it.

Oh, and stick to 32 bit.

As for Linux, I'm currently formatting drive to do a hard install as opposed to working from a live disk.

Why 32 bit then?

I actually wanted to get XP 64 bit but my mate said there is no support for this version any more and he put me right off!!

I am about to read your section in Vista threads.

Your mate may very well be disinformed.

Why not 64 Bit?

Because mostly you don't need it, lots of older software won't work and when I tried it I had countless problems whereas 32 Bit ran flawlessly in comparison.

And there still really isn't much on the market taking advantage of 64 Bit.

Interesting there Flopps I think this needs more research. Well there is another reason if I were to go above 4Gb and go to 6GB it would require a full install. I can't run a custom Vista install like I can with XP. So whatever I install I hope not to resintall the OS again and again.

As for your Vista thread it did take a while didn't it?!

Why does anybody need 6Gb in a domestic enviroment?

And you - Mr Tight Wad himself - won't buy 6Gb so who you kidding?

Yes, it did take a while.

Learn from my blog, Grasshopper ;)

I was thinking more 8GB in the long term why not!?

Why not?

So you don't have to use 64 Bit Vista, that's why not.

4Gb is more than enough for any home application or game.

Actually, 2Gb is more than enough for most with the current technology.

You're not running a server supplying several hundred workstations are you?

nope it is more a media server if anything
I hope 2gb ddr3 will do it for now :)

I reckon if I get a quad core CPU it'll serve me fine bit downbeat today my main machine won't post now (the one I want to replace asap)

I had to turn it off because the thing crashed and now it won't come on!!
