Networking between two computers FAILING?

My setup is currently two PC's directly linked via on board Ethernet ports.
But it never connects!
I tested the cable and its fine, the Onboards are fine but the darned thing
wont work no matter what I do!
I was hoping if some-one could tell me if this is a common problem or not.

To connect NICs back-to-back, you must use a crossover cable instead of a
standard cable. {That's guess #1; there are many other things you might
get wrong.}
