I am having problems in getting these two computers to communicate. One is a
Compaq with XP home and a ADSL Internet connection and the other is an
SIemens XP pro based portable.

Is anyone aware of any issues or changes that need to be made to the
standard wizard installation?

The IP automatic addressing is apperantly not working on the portable and it
seems to default to the XP pro mode.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the references and interest in my problem.

Looking at my settings I note a couple of things, I have following the
wizard set up and 3 network items result. a 1394, ethernet card and a bridge
miniport MAC.

When looking at these they appear to send data and the Linksys 5 port switch
light flickers but they receive nothing. I have switched off the ICF and the
Zone Alarm Firewall in my tests.

Also on the Host running XP Home with the ADSL internet connection the IP
address of the LAN is in the 169.254 range which is incorrect if I understand
the references quoted. However, I cannot determine why it is doing this as
the XP Pro machine is not even swithced on yet and it should be getting these
from its own settings?

What would be the best way to brute force the IP address and pre set the IP
address for the LAN only to work?

Another question with the cabling, if one has a cross over cable how would
you know? would the switch light not light up or are there any other clues?

Does the linksys 5 port switch behave differently than a simple hub? I had
4 HP Home PC connected to a simple hub and this always worked like a dream.

Yeah I know lots of questions to deal with but I have battled witht his one
for long hours already and I won't be beatten by the MACHINE!!!

Best regards,

Speedy
