networked computers lose connection

We have four computers networked to a fifth computer. All run Win XP and all
were set up the same way with NT before we purchased the new computers. Most
of the time that the fifth computer is idle, the connections from the other
four computers will be lost. When this happens, an error message states that
the system is in use. Trying to remap the drive produces the same error.
The only way to fix it appears to be logging back in to the fifth computer.
We never had this problem with NT, so I'm wondering if it's unique to XP, and
if there's something we can change to avoid this happening in the future.
All users are set up as users on the fifth computer, plus at least one of the
other four.

Mary Anne,

Check Power Settings for the network card on the fifth computer, Settings -
Network Connection - Local Area Connection - Properties - Configure - Power
Management tab, and turn off "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save
power".

Paranoia is not necessarily a bad thing - it's a normal response from experience.

Thanks so much. We'll give this a try - sounds like it should solve the
problem. (We won't know until the next time no one sits at the fifth computer
for a while)
