Networked computer cannot be seen by other computers

I have a problem with one of 5 computers in a small office environment.
Recently, Norton Antivirus (one of my least favorite programs in the history
of mankind :) crashed on this machine. It said that it had been tampered
with. It also told me to uninstall and reinstall. I did this and when I
booted up again, there was a lot of interesting stuff that took place, it
said that the hard drive was "dirty" and it did quite a bit of check disk
cleaning on it. When it was over, things seemed fine, then the computer
disappeared on the network. On the computer, we can see other networked
computers. I have tried to setup the computer on the network again. All
seems to go well, I turn on file and print sharing, but none of the shared
files or the computer show up on the other computers. I have tried turning
on and turning of the firewall, but that has no impact. I am wondering if
there is something I missed when Norton crashed. Every time I try to click
on a folder and share it, it says the server service is not available.

Help.

Charles,

Is this NAV a standalone product, or part of Norton Internet Security (which
contains NPF)? Which firewall are you turning off and on again?

Check Event Viewer when trying to Start the Server service manually.

Try resetting LSP / Winsock.

Hey Chuck. The NAV is part of the Norton Internet Security. I have tried
turning off the windows firewall, the norton firewall. You name it, I've
done it. I will check the resources you've listed. I am totally perplexed
by this. Every time I try to setup the computer on the network, it warns me
about file and printer sharing with a direct connection to the internet. I
have noticed that other computers don't necessarily do this. I am wondering
if NIS messed everything up and needs to be cleared from the registry.

Charles,

If NIS is involved, you'll have to disable Windows Firewall, enable NPF, and
configure NPF properly. Disabling NPF is generally non-productive. But you
can't run NPF and WF simultaneously.

The situation was resolved when I went to the desktop and did "start run
user controlpassword". The guest account was active, which it needs to be
but I changed the permissions to power user (click on Guest/Properties/Group
Membership)and then the laptop saw the desktop's shared files! Of course I
then changed the permissions back to what it had been (guest) and the laptop
still worked. This doesn't make a lot of sense - it was as if the permission
needed to be refreshed and then it was fine.
