My wife and I both have computers with XP Pro SP2. I set up a network by
creating a workgroup (no domain). I tried to use the NET SEND command to het
PC via the computer name and via her PC's IP address, it tells me to check
the spelling of the message alias, or the computer I'm sending to may be
busy...

Can I use the NET SEND command without setting up a domain?

Yes, you can do this without a Domain.

This is due to a couple of changes made by SP2.

1) The firewall is blocking the netbios traffic.
Go to the firewall exceptions tab, and enable F+P sharing exception.

2) The Messenger service is stopped by default.
Go to start | run | services.msc;
Scroll down to find the Messenger Service,
Start it, and set the startup type to Automatic.
