Help, I'm going mad! I have a network of 3 computers, all running XP. prof. I
recently changed the host computer and now the network does not work! I've
adjusted all the setting as shown on XP. troubleshooting connection sharing
{http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm}. The Client computers can share files
with the host but not the internet connection, when the ip's are set manually
192.168.0.2 / 03. In this manually set state, both ping. When repair is
used both revert to APIPA addresses. When ipconfig/renew is used, they come
up as unable to contact DCHP server. If enen manually configured the DNS from
Wanadoo, my server. The Host does not recognise ipconfig or ping as valid
commands!
Where am I going wrong, bear in mind my computer expertise is very limited!

You've left out some important details:

1. How are you connecting to the Internet?
2. Are you using a router or ICS?
3. What exactly does "I recently changed the host computer" mean? From
what to what?

If you are using ICS and "the host computer" means you are using Windows
Internet Connection Sharing, you cannot change its IP address. It must
be 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 and the client computers must have the
host as the gateway. Here is a great link to MVP Steve Winograd's site
with lots of information about ICS:

Hi, I connect to the internet via an IDSN line. I changed my Host machine,
the previous one operated XP as well. The host is set to 192.168.0.1. but as
I understand it, the Client ones should automatically go to 192.168.0.2 and
192.168.0.3, if the setting are set to obtain IP address automatically, as
instructed!

And what did you change on the host computer? Review the information at
Steve Winograd's site as I suggested:

Hi, I've set it up as per Nerwork Trouble Shooter as advised in my original
question. The Host machine is a replacement for my old one, which is now
being used as a Client I'm going through
..http://www.bcmaven.com/networking/faq.htm @ the moment but apart from the
fact the text is hard to read through the adverts, it appears to add little
to the http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm site. The bottom line appears to
be that the IP addresses are not being properly assigned.

What adverts? I've never seen any. Just to be sure (because normally I'm
using Mozilla on Linux here), I went to Steve's site on my XP box using
Internet Explorer. Not an advert or popup in sight. If you are getting
popups on Steve's site, there is a good chance that you have malware on
the computer. Malware is a common cause of connectivity problems, so
make sure your computer is 100% spyware and virus-free. Post back if
you need help in doing that.

Hi, the instructions on the site cross over adverts which make them difficult
to read! But that is a side issue! Having run a full Norton Virus scan &
Ad-aware etc, my system is clean! I briefly got automatic Ip address
assignment earlier by re-installing network card, doubtless by going through
it stage by stage, I can again! But, I still had no Client internet access!
Can't somebody just tell me the answer!
