Network worked except for Printer

I have two computers which is windows xp pro sp2 and windows 98. Both
computers can see the name of the opposite computer. Under printers and
faxes for windows 98, there's a check mark and a cable line for the picture
of the printer file. For windows xp, the picture for the printer has a hand
and a check mark. I can print in windows xp but not windows 98. When I
tried printing from windows 98, there's a pop up windows that says there's a
connection problem between the printer and the computer.

Points to check:

Security applies to printers too in XP, so it you're not using Simple
Sharing this could be an issue.

Other point worth noting is that some printers just don't network well; most
usually these are inkjets of kind that HAVE to be installed by running a
setup.exe instead of by the normal 'add printer' route. Lasers which use PCL
drivers almost always network OK.

Trying a file-share might confirm the latter as the problem if the
file-share works. If so, you might be able to find a better driver for the
printer.

Issues can also arise if the drivers on the XP and 98 machine are not the
same version. Apart from that, I've found that a lot of the Win98 drivers for
recent printers are damn buggy; fairly obvious that the manufacturers don't
spend much time on them as they're now a minority market.
