Network Win XP and Win 98 questions

OK, can someone answer this?

I have a new Dell laptop on XP professional. I bought an old Itronix
6250 laptop that has Win 98 SE installed. There are no drives on the
6250 - no floppy, CD ROM, etc.. It has one USB port, parralel and
serial port, and 2 PC slots.

I want to install National Geographic Topo soft ware on it. That is the
only purpose for that machine - to run mapping software in my 4x4 with
the GPS hooked up for live tracking when I'm out expolrin'

I tried the Direct Connection Parrel port connection - couldn't get
that to work. Tried to hook up a CD rom to both the USA port, and the
PC slot with a card with USB port. I think the CD drive wasn't Win98
compadible.

So, I'm down to getting a CD ROM for the PC slot, or putting a network
card in the PC slot and try to network with my Dell. Even if I am able
to do that, can I install software from my Dell's CD drive into the
other computer?

Last option might be to wipe the 6250 and install XP, but that would be
a pain, and with only a 6 gig HD, not a very viable option, either.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Start by sticking a cheap NIC in the W9x, then use a crossover cable (or a
hub/switch/router with a pair of non-crossover cables) to network those PCs.

If the XP PC has a CD, you can share that; then, on the W9x PC, map a
network
drive to the XP's shared CD. That will enable copying all of the files
from the CD to the CD-less PC.

I think that will enable installation of most CD-borne apps onto your
CD-less PC, but some (mostly game) apps expect to see the app's CD in the
CD-slot when they are started.

You can't AFAIK use the shared CD approach to install XP; I wish you could.
