Hello;
All family members share a single DSL connection, in a
home LAN using NIC cards cabled to a Netgear RT314 router
& DSL modem. The purpose of the LAN is one of economy and
peace preservation within the family. Two printers are
also shared via an HP Jetdirect print server, connected
to the Netgear router.
All machines on the Network have Windows ME operating
systems, all have the latest MS updates installed and are
protecetd with Zone Alarm, AVG 6.0, Adaware 6.0 and
Spybot software. I want to upgrade all machines to
Windows XP Pro using a retail CD.
Do I need to purchase a CD for each machine or will one
CD do the job? Also, at the moment I am somewhat a family
hero and do not wish to lose this status, therefore, I
need help to perform this daunting task. Where do I go to
get the scoop? I am a patient beginner. Please excuse my
verbosity. Thanks for any help and advice.

You don't need a CD per PC, but you do need a separate license for
each PC. See below:

XP PRO cost more than XP HE, yet XP HE is good enough for most
homes and small offices. To choose, try below:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing.asp

To maintain your family hero status, do one PC at a time. For the
first upgrade, do it when the rest of the family can't watch.
And, backup before you upgrade.

Networking in XP Home is horrible. Spend the extra $ for Pro.

Would you please explain what you mean by that, Rob? How will Pro do
a better job of sharing a DSL connection and printers on Melvin's home
network? What would justify the considerable extra cost of installing
Pro on each machines?
