Hi guys;

I'm getting lots of posts from people who can't use the Network setup Wizard
icon in XP. I've looked around but can't find any answers so I was wondering
if anyone here could shed some light on it. Here's the basic issue;

A user clicks on the icon and it doesn't open :-(

I saw this on a forum and aparently it worked for him.

Try scanning your system files... just in case..

System File Checker

Start > Run > type "sfc /purgecache" {enter}

Start > Run > type "sfc /scannow" {enter}

Have your OS cd in your cdrom drive.

(You can also run these commands from the Command Shell -
dos prompt)

You can try to launch it from the command line by typing the following:

%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe hnetwiz.dll,HomeNetWizardRunDll

If your machine is joined to a domain (XP Pro only), you should at least see
an error page which states that you can not run the wizard because your
machine
is joined to a domain. If this works, it means that there is something wrong
with
the icon launch specification.

Thanks

Usually this happens when your Network Connections folder is emtpy, try
fixing that first...

First make sure that your Network Connections Service and Remote Access
Connection Manager services are running. If they are then compare the LAN
connections in the connections folder with the Network Adapter drivers in
device manager. If there is a Network Adapter driver that doesn't have a
corresponding connection in the connections folder then try reinstalling it.

If the services are running and you still have no icons in the connections
folder, run each of these commands at a command prompt

regsvr32 netshell.dll
regsvr32 netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 netman.dll

And then reboot.

I've had this happen to a few machines on my network. Thanks for the
fix, Ken. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this to happen?
Thanks.

Depends on what the problem was.

If the regsvr32s fixed it then the components were coming unregistered. I'm
not sure exactly what causes this but it is probably some software
installation/uninstalltion program that is messing where it doesn't belong.

I have the same problem but running the commands:

regsvr32 netshell.dll
regsvr32 netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 netman.dll

does not really help at all. At the same time, my ICS option is not avaliable at the advanced tab. I do have two network adapters and they are not bridged. Furthermore, my IEEE 1394 connection icon does not show up in the network connections folder.
