Hello,

I ran the Windows XP Pro SP1 Network Setup Wizard a few days ago and
have since been unable to use the internet. I use DHCP Wifi at home
and static IP thru wired LAN at work. I've tried reconfiguring the
TCP/IP settings many times (setting them to how it was previously),
and even running the network setup wizard with many different
configurations, all without success. I seem to be able to see other
computers in the same workgroup, but I'm unable to do anything on the
internet. If I do an nslookup, it can't find either of the DNS servers
I have specified in the TCP/IP settings (although other computers on
the network can see them fine).

This happened to me before, and I simply used System Restore to fix
the problem, but for some reason now there are no restore points
available. Whenever I open System Restore, only a checkpoint from the
time that I opened the application is available. I can't change
months.

I've contacted tech support for my computer, but they just say to
reinstall windows, which is not an option at this time.

Thanks for any help

Some more information on my situation

I've tried resetting TCP/IP using the netsh command. This did not help

Everywhere I read, the MS MVPs say that to "undo" the Network Setup Wizard, all one has to do is run it again with different settings. However, the wizard changed something that I'm not able to change back that is breaking my network. I'm sure that the wizard is the problem, since this exact thing happened to me before after using the wizard. (and as I said before, I'm unable to use system restore this time because that's not working and is deleting all my restore points after I create them for some reason, despite having 1gb free on my c drive)

Thank yo

Thanks for the help, but I'm sorry, I tried doing what you describe many times

It turns out that the wizard corrupted winsock on my system. I had to follow someone's revision of the (poorly written) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817571 article to reinstall winsock and TCP/IP. This fixed the problem

It had nothing to do with my NIC card, the router, etc. DHCP is out of the question here at work since I have to use a static IP, so that was irrelevant to the problem. I didn't install NetBIOS since it's a security risk

Everything is working well now though

Undo what the wizard did

Then forget it exists. If seen this mess up more networks than it setup

Just make sure that your NICs are set to obtain IP dynamically, each PC ha
a unique computer name and the same workgroup, and enable NetBIOS ove
TCP/IP. That's all there is to it
