My question has to do with network security, I want to
set-up a workgroup. When ping the computers from their
own command prompt they are not successful, if figured
and tried it was due to the Norton protection running. My
question if I turn the Norton protection off to use my
workgroup what can I do to protect the network. Do i
have to configure Norton someway?

What are you trying to protect it from? You can configure the appropriate
filters to allow or deny traffic from certain interfaces.

John,

This is a common problem with personal firewalls. I believe that it
is possible to desgnate specific computers as trusted by NIS, so
network traffic (like pinging or file sharing) will be allowed by the
firewall.

Some firewalls allow multiple layers of trust, designating any
computer as either Totally Trusted, Somewhat Trusted, Somewhat
Untrusted, or Totally Untrusted. Each layer of trust (excepting
Totally Untrusted) would allow a different combination of protocols or
services.

I believe that careful configuration of Norton is preferable. I have
seen reports that NIS, as many personal firewalls, does not respond
well to being disabled.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
